Moments of Identity
Oil on Canvas Paper, Screenprint
60 x 40 in
Identity is a stockpile of memories that make us who we are. I explore my own identity through personal memories and relationships. I look at how vividness, obscurity, and loss continue to shape who I am. If you look carefully, you may see something deeper.
I primarily work with paint and printmaking, each taking on different styles and purposes. Painting is where I focus on colors and brushwork, usually in an impressionistic style, allowing me to be more expressive. Printmaking, I focus on structure, using relief and/or screen printing to provide stability in my process. Using these mediums allows me to explore many topics, but my work primarily focuses on the overlays between memory and identity, using personal experience to connect and reflect on memory. My process requires me to allow intuition to guide the direction of my work. The use of text within my work has created an opportunity to add my own voice, sharing my emotions and experiences. While working on a piece, I must be open to communication between the work and myself to allow the project to evolve as it should. By exploring my personal memories and relationships with my family, friends, events, and places, my goal is not only to connect with my audience but also to connect with my own identity.
